11. Liepaja

Liepaja - the city under lime-trees, seaport and the city’s modern life.

Itinerary of excursion:

We depart from Riga in the morning. Road goes through Zemgale. You will see Saldus – one of the oldest towns in Latvia. Approximately at 12:00 am we will arrive in Liepaja. You will have an excursion in the third largest city of Latvia and hear about its role in Kurzeme from the 13th century till nowadays. Liepaja is not only a seaport, but also wonderful resting place. It was year of 2001, when beach of Liepaja became a Blue Flag Beach. It has the whitest and the finest sand in Baltic States. We will have a sightseeing of Seaside Park (Jurmalas Parks), which is the biggest maritime park in Latvia. Then we’ll have an excursion in the centre of the city, and see architectural treasure of Liepāja – St. Anna’s Church as well as St. Nicola’s Orthodox Maritime Cathedral – the highest cupola type building on the shore of the Baltic Sea.
Liepaja was the closed type city of Soviet army. Nowadays infrastructure of Soviet Army is used in modern and unconventional way – they use jail and fortress as the place where scenic performances are shown.
It will be possible, if you wish, to go to the jail and play game “defendant and prisoner”, and put yourself in the place of prisoner.
After excursion – you will have a free time.
Return to Riga late in the evening, approximately at 22:00 pm.
