12. Natural Resources of Latvia

Preserving the natural resources is at least as necessary as preserving historical and architectural objects. We can clearly see the history of the nation only if we care about our history and the related environment to it.

Itinerary of excursion:

1st day.
We depart from Riga in an early morning. Road in the direction of Jurmala. During the 70’s of 20th century, this highway was one of the most advanced in Baltic States. Natural landscape on both sides of the road. Arrival to Kemeri. The Kemeri National Park, which has seven restricted areas. Practically every area forms distinctive natural region. The largest part of the territory is composed of Greater Kemeri Bog, Kanieru Lake, and the valley of river Slocene. Short rest after the walk.
Passage to the Sliteres national park. It is a wonderful territory with sand–dunes, which are several kilometres long. There are also lakes and several varieties of forests. We will pay a special attention to Blue Hills (Zilie Kalni). Close to them in the direction of Kolkas creek extends pristine territory. We will see such environment as it was for centuries.
Passage to Talsi. A walk in the evening through the city, which nicely fits into the landscape of maritime territory. History of the city confirms this harmony.

2nd day.
Breakfast. Passage to Kuldiga. We will visit the most famous landscape features in the territory of Abavas valley’s National Park. Abava and Venta. Venta’s fall – the widest and the most beautiful waterfall in Latvia. Riezupes sand-caves – interesting object, even if labyrinths of underground caves are man-made. Abavas valley – nature protection object of UNESCO. Passage to Liepaja and the visitation of the biggest Maritime Park in Latvia. Papes Lake, it’s role in the maritime park. After excursion – free time.
Departure to Riga at 18.00 pm, homecoming in the late evening.
